Field of Dreams History
Season Three

American League West:  The Channing Bombers took the lead in this division right out of the gate, but were never ahead by more than 4 games through April and May.  By June 10, the Dyersville Dreamers had caught them and overtook them for the division lead.  At that time, every team in the division was within 5 games of 1st place.  Into July, Channing and Dyersville jockeyed back and forth, while the Mudville Nine fell to more than 10 games back to drop out of the race.  The Baton Rouge River Bats and the Gashouse Gangreen each managed to stay within 4 games in early August, though the Milwaukie Muckdogs eventually faded by then.  The Gashouse Gangreen were more than 10 games out by the end of August, and it was a 3-team race.  In late September, the Dreamers built as much as a 7 1/2 game lead on both the Bombers and the River Bats.  Both would now be fighting for a wild card spot, which the Bombers would take.

American League South: The Cincinnati Legends took the reins in this division early.  By the end of July, the Legends had built an 8 1/2 game lead on the 2nd place Eagles, and both the Alaska Laserlight and the SouthSide Hitmen were 12 games back.  They were able to cruise from there, increasing the lead to as many as 18 games at one point.  The Frisco Eagles and the Alaska Laserlight fought for 2nd place, neither one able to establish an advantage.  The Eagles had a slim lead at the end of September, but the Laserlight overcame it and beat the Eagles out for 2nd place by 1 game.  The Eagles played .500 baseball for the last 50 games of the season, slipping them out of a playoff spot.

National League East: The San Fernando Valley Fluffers roared out the the best record in baseball through April, 9 games over .500 at 17 - 8.  The Capital City Juicers, Arizona Heat and Custer's Crimson Tide reeled them in eventually, catching them in July.  The Juicers eventually built a 6-game lead in the division.  Through September, the Tide slowly worked back into the race for 1st place, and eventually tied the Juicers on the last day of the season by making up a 2 game deficit in the last 2 days.  They did it by winning 24 of 37 games in the last month and a half of the season, while the Juicers won only 19 of 39 in the same time period.

National League North: The Boden Jacks had the lead in April in this division and kept it, even though several teams would tie them throughout the season no other team took over the lead in the division.  The real race would be for 2nd and a possible wild card spot.  All 5 of the other teams were in the hunt throughout the summer.  The Graettinger Pirates and the Neflheim Norsemen appeared poised to take a playoff spot, while the North Iowa Undertakers could never really get it going.  At the end of September, the Undertakers were 6 games out of a playoff spot, as it appeared that the Tide and the Norsemen would each earn a wild card berth.  In the last 10 games of the season, the Undertakers won them all, while the Norsemen won only 2 games and the Pirates only 4.  The Undertakers used this surge to tie the Graettinger Pirates for the last wild card spot.  In a 1-game playoff, the Undertakers Wilbur Wood outpitched the Pirates Bob Gibson by throwing a complete game, 1-run victory to send the Undertakers into the playoffs.

Playoffs:

In the American League Playoffs, the Alaska Laserlight and the Cincinnati Legends met in the first round.  The Legends won the South division by 16 games over the Laserlight, but they tied the season series 9 - 9.  In the first game, the Laserlight lit up Legends ace Christy Mathewson for 7 runs in 4 innings.  The Legends got by in game 2 by scoring 6 runs in the 7th and 8th innings, winning the game 7 - 6.  Back home, the Laserlight took game 3 by a score of 4 - 3, then Curt Schilling threw a gem for the Laserlight in game 4, a 3-hit, complete game shutout.  His opposing starter, Mordecai Brown, also pitched well by allowing just 4 hits, but a single and 4 walks in the 5th inning doomed him and the Laserlight won the game 3 - 0 and took the series 3 games to 1.  The other series, the Channing Bombers and the Dyersville Dreamers, wouldn't wind up to be as much of an upset no matter who won it.  The Bombers had the best record in the league the prior season, while the Dreamers had the 2nd best record this season.  In game 1, the Bombers pounded out 18 hits and 15 runs against 5 Dreamers pitchers to win 15 - 5 on the road.  Dizzy Dean, the starter for the Dreamers, stopped the bleeding in game 2 by allowing just 5 hits and 1 earned run for a complete game victory.  The Dreamers went on the road and were very opportunistic against Bombers starter Kevin Appier, scoring 7 runs off of 8 hits for a 7 - 4 victory.  They closed out the series the very next day by again exploiting Bombers starting pitching, this time getting 7 runs off of Ed Lopat.  The Dreamers won the series 3 - 1.

The Laserlight and Dreamers met for the American League pennant, the Dreamers had homefield advantage.  In game 1, the Laserlight scored in the top of the 9th to tie the game, but the Dreamers scored in the bottom of the inning when tiring starter Deacon Phillippe gave up 2 walks and 2 singles.  Game 2 was crazy.  The Dreamers took a 4 - 0 lead, then the Laserlight tied it.  The Dreamers took a 7 - 4 lead, then the Laserlight tied it.  The Dreamers took a 9 - 7 lead, then the Laserlight charged ahead 11 - 9.  In the bottom of the 8th, the Dreamers used small-ball to squeeze across a run, making it 11 - 10 Laserlight.  Then, in the bottom of the 9th, facing Laserlight closer Ugueth Urbina, the Dreamers pinch-hitter Edgar Martinez hit a full-count pitch for a solo home run to tie the game and then catcher Ted Radcliffe hit another solo home run, also off a full-count pitch, to win it in walk-off style.  The Dreamers took game 3 in less-dramatic fashion, 5 - 3, and had a commanding 3 - 0 series lead in this best-of-seven.  The Laserlight won game 4 by a score of 6 - 5 when Brian Giles hit a walk-off one-run double in the bottom of the 9th inning.  For game 5, with the series 3 - 1 in favor of the Dreamers, the Dreamers starter Dizzy Dean was marvelous again, allowing just 1 earned run in 8+ innings of work.  Laserlight starter Bert Blyleven didn't make it out of the 3rd inning, mysteriously injured leaving the mound on a routine fly ball to left field.  Reliever Dan Quisenberry gave the Laserlight 5 innings of shutout relief, and the game wound up tied 2 - 2 after 9 innings.  The Laserlight's Jim Edmonds hit a 3-run homerun in the bottom of the 11th inning to win the game, 5 - 2.  The Laserlight bullpen pitched 8 innings, gave up 3 hits, no walks and just 1 earned run to allow the Laserlight to stay in the series, now down 3 - 2.  In game 6, the Laserlight were held scoreless for the first 5 innings by Dazzy Vance, then exploded for 15 runs in the 6th, 7th and 8th innings to force a 7th game in the series.  Curt Schilling could not come up with a repeat performance for the Laserlight though, as the Dreamers took game 7 easily 10 - 2 to move on to the World Series.

In the National League Playoffs, the North Iowa Undertakers faced the Boden Jacks in one series after losing the season series 6 - 12.  The Undertakers, without a day of rest due to the play-in game with the Pirates and with the worst record of the 8 playoff teams, showed that they weren't to be taken lightly.  Undertakers starter Cy Young allowed just one earned run, and catcher Ivan Rodriguez hit a solo home run in the 6th inning to break a 1 - 1 tie.  The 2 - 1 score would hold up.  In game 2, Undertakers starter Hal Newhouser would match Young's feat from the prior game, allowing just one earned run.  The Jacks would manage to score 3 runs off of a Joe Torre 3-run home run in the bottom of the 9th to tie the game off of Bob Howry.  The Undertakers were undeterred, sneaking home a run in the top of the 11th to win the game 5 - 4.  Finally at home, the Undertakers Dennis Martinez did even better than Young and Newhouser.  He pitched a complete game 3-hit shutout to complete the sweep of the Jacks.  In the other series, the Custer's Crimson Tide were at home against the Capital City Juicers.  The Juicers jumped all over them, winning game 1 by a score of 7 - 2, including home runs by Henry Aaron and Yogi Berra.  In game 2 the Juicers starter Kevin Brown gave up just one earned run in 8 innings of work, and the Juicers took a 2 - 0 series lead.  For game 3, Tide starter JR Richard outdeuled Whitey Ford, allowing just one earned run off of 5 hits in a complete game victory.  Ford only allowed 4 hits in his complete game loss, the difference was a solo home run by the Tide's Barry Bonds.  The Juicers won game 4 by a score of  4 - 3 thanks to 3 unearned runs allowed by the Tide defense.

The Juicers and the Undertakers, two wild card teams, met to determine the National League pennant winner.  The Undertakers picked up where they left off in the prior series, great pitching allowed just 2 earned runs for the game and they scored 4 runs in the 5th inning off of Juicers starter Lefty Grove when they hit 6 straight singles.  The Juicers won game 2 by a score of 5 - 3 to draw even in the series.  Whitey Ford pitched another sensational game for the Juicers in game 3, allowing just 2 earned runs on 3 hits and no walks.  In game 4, never in doubt, the Juicers scored 12 runs on 16 hits, 8 of them for extra bases.  The Juicers now had a 3 - 1 series lead.  Lefty Grove won the closeout game 5 for the Juicers by pitching 8 innings and allowing just one earned run for the final score of 4 - 2.  The Capital City Juicers would be the National League representative in the World Series.

In the World Series, the Juicers and Dreamers met, with the Dreamers having home field advantage.  Even so, the Juicers jumped on the Dreamers in game 1, taking advantage of a porous defense (the lowest fielding percentage in the regular season) and ineffective pitching.  The Dreamers scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 7th and 8th innings of game 2 to tie the series at 1 - 1.  Over to Capital City for game 3, and both starters pitched very well.  There were only a total of 9 hits and 3 walks for both teams combined, as the Juicers starter Whitey Ford allowed just one run to better Dreamers starter Mike Mussina's complete game in which he allowed two runs.  The Dreamers, down 2 games to 1, got a 3-run home run from Johnny Mize in the first inning of game 4 and held on for a 5 - 2 victory and a tied Series.  Dizzy Dean, the Dreamers starter for game 5, pitched a complete game and allowed just two earned runs, and the Dreamers offense pounded Juicers pitching by scoring 10 runs on 13 hits, of which 5 were home runs.  The Dreamers had a 3 - 2 lead and were heading home for game 6.  , the Juicers and Dreamers had a classic battle in game 6.  The Juicers took a 3 - 2 lead off of a 2-run home run by Yogi Berra in the 6th inning.  They scored two more runs in the top of the 6th off of two Dreamers errors, they had 4 in the game, and the Juicers had a nice 5 - 2 lead going into the bottom of the 7th inning.  The Dreamers capitalized on Juicers errors in the bottom of the 7th though, scoring two runs off of two walks and an error.  In the top of the 8th, the Juicers had 3 straight singles but only scored one run due to two outs on base running errors.  They still had the lead, 6 - 4.  In the bottom of the 8th inning, with Juicers closer Billy Wagner in the game to get the final 5 outs to tie the series and force a game 7, the Dreamers Mules Suttles hit a 2-run home run to tie the game.  It would remain that way until the bottom of the 11th inning, when the Dreamers loaded the bases with 2 singles and an intentional walk.  With only one out, Bid McPhee hit a ground ball to second base, but the Juicers Eddie Collins was unable to get the runner at the plate and the Series winning run came across.  The Dyersville Dreamers are Field of Dreams Season 3 Champions.

All Star Game: The All Star Game was tied 3 - 3 going into the bottom of the 8th inning.  The American League was the home team, and they scored 4 runs off of Troy Percival and Billy Wagner.  Eddie Mathews hit a 3-run triple and Tris Speaker followed with a 1-run single to make the score 7 - 3.  The National League would get a solo home run from pinch hitter Babe Ruth to make the score 7 - 4, but the American League won the game.  Eddie Mathews had hit a solo home run earlier in the game, so he finished the game 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored and 4 runs batted in.
