Season Two
American League West: The Channing Bombers took the lead in this division right out of the gate.
By the end of April they were 20 - 8 and had a 4-game lead. The Gashouse Gangreen kept them close, within 3 games as late as
August 18th. Throughout the remainder of the season the Bombers poured it on, finishing with a 12 game lead over the Dreamers.
The Gangreen held onto a 2nd place finish in this division even though the Dreamers closed out as well as the Bombers. The Dreamers had
the same record as the Bombers for the last 48 games of the season but finished 2 games out of the wild card spot to the Gangreen.
American
League South: The SouthSide Hitmen got off to a good start, taking a small lead in the first month of the season. Throughout
May, the Frisco Eagles and the Cincinnati Legends muscled their way to the top, the Hitmen found themselves 10 games out of 1st in
the division by June. The Frisco Eagles led the rest of the way, extending to as much as an 8-game lead before finally winning
the division by 5 over the Legends. The 3rd place team finished a distant 25 games out in what was easily the least competitive
division.
National League East: There were 5 teams hotly contesting this division from the start. Only the Rochester Gandy
Dancers faded early, as the other 5 teams all jockeyed for the lead well into July. By August, it appeared that the Trinidad
Dragons, Texas Aggies and Arizona Heat would all give way, as the San Fernando Valley Fluffers and the Custer's Crimson Tide
battled for the lead and a 7-game gap opened up between the 2 leaders and the other 3. The Aggies and Dragons didn't
give up hope, and slowly worked their way back into the contest. On September 21st, only 1/2 a game separated the Fluffers,
Tide and Aggies, while the Dragons were only 4 games back with each team having 17 to 19 games to play. The Dragons finished
from that point on 14 - 4, the Tide 12 - 6, the Fluffers 9 - 8 and the Aggies 6 - 13. The race to the finish found the Dragons
leaping over the Fluffers and Aggies in the standings, but they finished 1 game short of making the final wild card spot as the Graettinger
Pirates in the NL North finished 8 - 8 to just nudge over the finish line.
National League North: This was arguably the most
competitive division. The North Iowa Undertakers were the first to fall in the standings. The Georgia Gamblers and the
Neflheim Norsemen finally gave way in June, falling 7 games out of the division lead. The Boden Jacks and the Cow Bay Clamshuckers
traded for the division lead while the Graettinger Pirates held down the 3rd place position but never straying far from the leaders.
The Jacks would win the division, but the Clamshuckers and Pirates took both wild card spots.
Playoffs:
In the American
League Playoffs, the Frisco Eagles and the Cincinnati Legends met again in the first round, just as they had in Season One.
The Eagles had home field advantage for the best-of-5 series, but it didn't matter. The Legends took care of business quickly
and easily, sweeping the Eagles in 3 games. They won with both pitching and offense, outscoring the Eagles 23 - 8 in the 3 games.
The Channing Bombers had the best record, and home-field advantage against the Gashouse Gangreen. The Gangreen finished 12 games
behind the Bombers for the division in the regular season, and in game 1 Greg Maddux made it look like the Bombers wouldn't miss a
beat, shutting out the Gangreen in a dominating complete game performance. The Gangreen did take game 3 and then ran Maddux
out of the game early in game 4. Game 4 went to the 12th inning as the Gangreen made every effort to tie the series, but 3 straight
2-out singles, the last an RBI producer off the bat of Stan Hack and the Bombers managed to win the game and put away the series.
The
Bombers and Legends met in the American League Championship Series, and the Bombers had home field advantage. The Bombers, down
7 - 5, managed to score 3 runs with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th inning of game 1 to win. Then the Bombers, with game 2 tied
at 2 - 2, scored a run in the bottom of the 9th for their second walk-off win in a row and a 2 - 0 series lead. The Legends
won games 3 and 4 to tie the series back up. In game 5, the Bombers had a 6 - 4 lead going into the bottom of the 9th.
Bombers starter Randy Johnson was still in the game and allowed a single and 2 walks to load up the bases with no outs. Bill
Henry came on in relief, and got a strikeout and then a run-scoring line out. Down still by 1 run and now with 2 outs, Ralph
Kiner hit the first pitch he saw into the left-center field gap to score 2 runs and win the game. The Legends gave the
Bombers some of thier own medicine and took a 3 - 2 series lead. In Game 6, Walter Johnson took the mound for the Legends and
pitched a masterpiece, a complete game 4-hitter to shut out the Bombers and send the Legends to the World Series after they'd won
4 straight games in the LCS.
In the National League Playoffs, the Crimson Tide faced the Cow Bay Clamshuckers, and even though
the Tide won 3 fewer games they had home field advantage for winning thier division. The Clamshuckers took game 2 on the road
though, and this series looked like it might get rough. The Tide went on the road for games 3 and 4 and wound up having no problem
at the Polo Grounds, winning both games to take the series, 3 - 1. The Graettinger Pirates were facing the Boden Jacks, and
everyone was sure that son would take dad easily. The Pirates had held the 3rd spot in the division virtually all season long,
and managed to take a wild card spot. The Jacks won game 1 at home easily, but then put a scare into the Jacks by winning game
2. The series now tied, the Pirates were heading home where they had the 2nd best home record in the National League.
The Pirates won both games 3 and 4 to win the series 3 - 1.
The Tide and Pirates met to decide the National League Pennant.
The Tide took game 1 by scoring 5 runs off of Pirates starter Bob Gibson. The Pirates, behind starter Warren Spahn, won game
2 on the road to tie up the series. The Tide scored a run in the top of the 9th inning in game 3 to win it, 3 - 2. Then,
in game 4, the Tide were down 3 - 2 in the top of the 9th but scored 2 runs against 3 Pirates relievers to win the game 4 - 3 and
take a commanding 3 - 1 series lead. The Pirates would not go down easily, in game 5 Bob Gibson pitched a gem, shutting out
the Tide in a complete game 6-hitter and the Pirates finally won a home game. The Tide weren't worried, they'd have the last
2 games at home. In game 6, the Pirates got the sticks out and pounded the Tide for 13 hits, 8 walks and 13 runs. This
series went to a game 7. The Pirates scored 3 quick runs in the top of the 1st inning against Tide starter Don Drysdale, and
Robin Roberts would cruise for the Pirates. The Pirates won the game 4 - 2 and earned the right to go to the World Series.
In
the World Series, the Legends and the Pirates meet again, and again the Legends had the home field advantage. In game 1,
with the score tied at 3, the Legends scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 8th to take first blood. In game 2, the Legends lit
up Pirates starter Bob Gibson for 6 runs in 3 innings, and they continued to pile on the hits, 12 in all, for a 10 - 4 victory and
a 2 - 0 series lead. In game 3, back at home, the Pirates Warren Spahn did the unthinkable. He pitched a complete game
perfect game against the Legends. 27 Legends up, and 27 down. No hits, no walks and no errors. There were only 2
strikeouts, 4 ground ball putouts by second baseman Lou Whitaker, 6 ground ball put outs by shortstop Alan Trammell, 6 fly ball outs
by right fielder Paul Waner and 9 other fly ball outs. The Pirates were back in the series, down 1 - 2. The Legends recovered
for 12 hits in a game 4 victory and were back in command with a 3 - 1 series lead. The Pirates had been down by this before
though. In game 5 the Pirates whipped the Legends 10 - 2 to send the series back to Cincinnati. In game 6 the Legends
pitchers allowed just 1 run through 8 innings, and Ralph Kiner hit 2 home runs and drove in 5. Though the Pirates scored 4 runs
in the top of the 9th inning, it wasn't close to being enough as the Legends took the Series by winning the game 10 - 5. The
Cincinnati Legends are once again the Field of Dreams Champion.
All Star Game: The All Star Game was won by the visiting
American League, 6 - 1. The National League didn't score until the bottom of the 9th when Dan Quisenberry allowed a lead
off double by Babe Ruth, followed by a sac fly and a ground ball. The American League substitues did the job, Ted Williams subbed
in and drove in 2 runs with a solo home run and a bases loaded walk. Tris Speaker and Roberto Alomar also both subbed in and
each collected 2 hits.
